It’s January 2021! That means we have made it through 2020. It means that we are starting a new year. And, it means that it has been 48 years since the United States legalized abortion in our country. That’s right…48 years ago, on January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court released their decision to make abortion legal in all 50 states.
Since then, well over 61 million babies have been legally aborted in the United States.
Most likely, the number is over 62 million as I write this. Getting statistics on abortion is a bit tricky. The laws in some states have not required reporting of those numbers over the years. Some states do not report them at all or under-report them.
Interesting.
Interesting. If it’s such a good thing, why hide the numbers?
So you know, I’m not real excited about writing this series on abortion. I don’t enjoy getting people all bent out of shape. Truthfully, I’ve been avoiding the subject since I stepped down as the executive director of our local crisis pregnancy center.
And really, it’s a lot easier and a lot more fun to write a blog about baking zucchini bread…just saying!
However, with what looks like a definite change in federal policies coming from the White House, I am feeling my back up against a very hard, brick wall. Think what you will of President Trump, he has made incredible strides in protecting the unborn and their mothers in our country. I am sure that Biden and Harris will do everything possible to undo his good work. I believe they will also increase federal funding and remove any regulations to this atrocity.
Therefore, I thought I would do a series of what could be called the myths of abortion. I think you will not only be surprised by some of this information but also shocked by it. At least, if it is new information to you, I hope you will be shocked.
Safe, legal, and rare?
Let’s begin with a phrase that was coined by President Clinton when he said that abortions should be “safe, legal, and rare”. Even though those politicians who support abortion rights have dropped this phrase, probably because they know just how untrue it is, I still hear it around.
In fact, the only truth in that phrase is that abortions are legal. That was decided 48 years ago.
As far as being safe or rare…let’s look at that.
Rare? Well, that’s easy. If in 48 years over 61 million babies have been legally killed in their mother’s wombs, it’s obviously not rare. Say we average it out, while using the lower number of 61 million, that’s over 1,270,000 babies for each year. If like me numbers aren’t your strong point, that’s way over one million each year.
You can’t claim that.
Rare? I don’t think so.
During WWII over 6 million Jews were killed during the holocaust. The world, rightly so, was appalled by this brutality.
In 1991, when the World Trade Centers were brought down by a terrorist attack, 3,000 people died a horrible death. The USA, rightly so, did not take this lying down. We went to war.
And over the last year, in the USA close to 350,000 people have died from complications of Covid-19. While the majority of these deaths were people who had health conditions that would make any virus a serious threat to them, we have shut down our economy, put people out of jobs, and drastically hurt the education of children.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t respond to a serious virus.
What I am saying is that when put alongside abortion statistics, these events pale in comparison. I have to wonder if we respond so strongly to all of the above, how do we justify keeping our heads in the sand when well over 61 million babies have been killed?
No matter your answer to that question, you certainly cannot claim that abortion is rare!
Safe? For who?
So how about safe? Hmmmm…let’s look at that as well.
There are just so many instances of neglect and downright abuse of women in abortion clinics across the country, one cannot seriously claim it to be safe. These instances are sometimes hard to find simply because the media does not report them…unless of course the media is put in a situation where they have to at least mention them. Such was the case with Kermit Gosnell.
Gosnell ran an abortion clinic in Philadelphia.
In 2013 Gosnell was on trial for five counts of murder…one woman and 4 babies, along with over 200 other violations. He was found guilty on three counts of first-degree murder and manslaughter. The woman was given an overdose of Demerol by unlicensed assistants. The babies were born alive and he cut open the back of their necks and snipped their spines. Gosnell’s “House of Horrors” was unregulated and not inspected. The conditions there were horrific.
By the way, the only reason they were raided was that the police thought drugs were being illegally distributed. They were right. But so much more was happening in that clinic.
Doubt what I’m saying? The Grand Jury report is online.
Not the exception.
It might be one thing if Gosnell’s clinic was the exception. Unfortunately, it is not. If you took the time to research it, you would find that it is relatively common. The pro-abortion community wants no regulations where abortion is concerned. This can only lead to incredibly unsafe conditions and horrific abuse.
Is there any surprise then that there are serious complications that consistently come from abortions? A woman may face hemorrhaging, shock, infection, cervical laceration, uterine rupture, and even death. Also, women who abort are more likely to experience future problems like stillbirth, miscarriage, and infertility.
Obviously, abortion is not safe. We all know that it results in the death of a child. But neither is it safe for women.
So much for abortion being “safe, legal, and rare”.
The last 48 years have proven abortion to be neither safe nor rare. Not only have over 61 million babies lost their lives, but often the women involved have been abused, maimed, or lost their lives as well.
